It seems like just yesterday that our daughter Alyssa became engaged to her best friend in the world, Kyle Smith. The engagement took place at the top of a fire tower on Kane Mountain in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. When you’re up in the tower you can see for miles in every direction. There are spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the many pristine lakes that seem to sparkle from the light of the sun.
As a side note, Alyssa’s fiancée is afraid of heights so you know he really must love her to climb all the way to the top of the tower just to pop the question to her! Fortunately she said yes…adding that he needed to turn over the ring box that he was holding upside-down. I think he was a little tense in the moment, having climbed all the way to the top as fast as he could!
Several weeks after that glorious engagement day, the planning began. All of the big details were handled pretty quickly: the venue, the dress, the DJ, the photographer, and the caterer. But the rest of the details got put aside for other more important things like our daughter and her fiancée buying a house and getting a new puppy named Bowser. Our beloved Chico passed away earlier in the year, and it was time to move on. Now we have a grand puppy we can play with and spoil, which is our right as grandparents.
What’s amazing is how fast the year flew by, and the date of the wedding really snuck up on us. With five weeks to go, we went into hyper wedding mode, taking on all those little details that consume a lot of time. Just the sheer number of them was overwhelming. But one by one as I check them off of my list, I’m beginning to feel a weight lifting off of my shoulders. I’m confident now that I can get it all done.
When you count down to any event, whether you’re planning a wedding, launching a book, or running a marathon, it’s important to take time amidst the tasks and details to enjoy the process along the way and the feeling of accomplishment as you complete each challenge.
For me, my daughter’s wedding is something I’ve dreamed about forever…even much more than my own. One minute I’ve learned that I’m pregnant with a girl and before you know it, she’s off to college, and then a few years later starting her own married life.
As I count down to the wedding, I have mixed feelings. I’m so happy to be able to celebrate my daughter’s wedding with all of my family and friends. And I’m a little sad because before I know it, it will all be over… another milestone come and gone. Fortunately, life is what you make it, and soon enough I’ll be on to the next milestone, challenge, or fun activity! Isn’t that what life is truly all about?
