Your Personal Connections
The 2016 Smith Family Reunion at Pine Lake
There are so many aspects of your life that contribute to your health and happiness. And one of the most important of them is your personal connections…the people in your life that bring you joy and nourish your soul – well at least most of the time!
Several years back we decided to spend our summers on Canada Lake in the Adirondacks in upstate New York, near where my entire family lives. Since our children were out on their own and all we needed to do our work was a high-speed internet connection and an airport, we decided this would be a great way to get out of the heat of the North Carolina summers and enjoy the family we see only a few times a year. It wouldn’t necessarily be a vacation, but we’d be able to work while enjoying a beautiful lake right in our front yard.
What happened in that first year was amazing. We made so many wonderful connections with people around the lake. And they now have become our alternate universe. We spend two months there in the summer and the other 10 months looking forward to our next year there.
What makes life so special on the lake is that there is always something going on. One day we’re having dinner at one of our friends’ lake houses and the next we’re watching amazing musicians perform on a barge on the lake just outside of the Canada Lake Store. We refer to it as “The Store” as it’s the only one on the lake! And we get to spend a lot more time with our extended family that we miss so much…being so far away in North Carolina the remainder of the year.
When you think about your own life, you’ll discover how truly important your own friends and family are to you. That’s because as social beings, we absolutely need the companionship of others to nourish us and give meaning to our lives.
So as you go through your day, cherish those special personal connections…because they are the bonds that truly support your happiness and overall well-being.
